Eight hours' office life or even longer while sitting in an office chair can inevitably cause back pain. The main reason for the pain is the long time fixed posture which just increases pressure in our body parts like arms, back, shoulders. The fact that we slouch in the the chair can overstretch our spinal ligaments. Over time, we will suffer from even worse back pain.
Then, when we recognize the importance of ergonomic chair, we still need to know how to well adjust it to make it offer us the maximum back support or maintain proper posture when we are seated in it. It is never enough to simply update our office chairs with ergonomic ones. It is essential to know some tips about how to adjust the office chair to the proportions of the individual's body for comfort and relief of aggravation to the spine.
We need to adjust the height of our office chair by just standing in front of our ergonomic chair and adjust it till the highest point of the chair, just below our knee cap. Then just sit it on it to see whether our feet can just reach the floor. For most of the ergonomic office chairs, they offer pneumatic adjustment levers. If the height is not proper, just get out of the chair and adjust it. Repeat the adjustment until the feet are just supported by the ground. If not, the proper height of chair will cause problems in circulations and even may cause serious medical conditions.
After the height adjustment, then we need to check the width and depth of our chair. The width and depth of the chair is also very important. For different people, our body dimensions just differ. So the adjustments should be made according to whom will sit on the chair. The chair needs to be adjustable between the widths of 17 and 20 inches. Just adjust it when we sit in the chair. As for the depth of the chair, we need to ensure some inches between the back of the knees and the front edge and still make the depth enough to allow us to lean back. This adjustment also matters about comfort and if not well properly adjusted, it will also cause some circulation issues if we are seated in constrained positions.
Adjust the armrest then. Just sit upright on the chair with arms hanging loosely on each side. Try to bend the elbows at 90 degrees. Adjust the armrest till the armrest can reach the elbow’s underside. If our armrests fail to touch this level or if the armrests are higher than this level, then still we need to adjust it. The right adjustment will maximize comfort for it can take the load off shoulders and the neck.
Adjust the lower back of the seat to ensure the natural inward curve of our lumbar spine. Such adjustment can avoid back pains. We sit in it and adjust it.
